About Newport village
The parish of Newport lies in the south east corner of the Lower Vale of York, between the Yorkshire Wolds and the river Humber. Newport village centre is 1 mile West of Junction 38 on the M62 motorway and lies at the intersection where the B1230 highway bridges the Market Weighton Canal. The River Humber is three miles south from the village centre, and the market town of Howden lies approximately seven miles to the West.
A number of buildings in Newport remain to reflect its industrial heritage and the village retains much of its early character. For its size Newport is excellently served by a wide variety of retail outlets and public houses.
The parish has many excellent and diverse walks through rural countryside leading to the Humber in one direction and the Wolds Way in another, following the original towpath of the canal. Within the village there are shorter walks and nature trails.
