Fishing in Market Weighton Canal

Now it appears the Parish Council are to be responsible for issuing tickets for fishing the canal would it be too much to expect that the canal will be improved?

Perhaps the Parish Council could be persuaded to part with some of our £65,000.00 to create some permanent fishing pegs. The Council could pay for materials and I'm sure some volunteers could be found ( free fishing for a year! ) to build them. This would help prevent random digging of the banks for access, and also direct anglers to suitable fishing pegs causing minimum nuisance to residents.

Presently though, the canal is choked with weed and unfishable!

Fishing in the Canal

I have been informed the new bailiff has resigned. Who is going to investigate reports of illegal fishing?

Should we ring Cara if we see anything suspicious ?

Fishing on the canal

I support the Parish Council obtaining the fishing rights because before when Hull and District had them it seemed they were very poorly managed.

However, the Parish Council now have to prove that they can manage the fishing better than H&D.

The interests of the village are important, but communications on this subject seem to be very poor.

Where can people fish - some say only on the east bank others say only on the west bank but the ticket seems to allow both.

What about pegs - if you provide pegs and limit people to fish from the pegs that would introduce an element of control.

What about erosion of the banks from those who want to dig out their own pegs - how is this to be controlled and any damage repaired.

What about parking on the banks, in particular in winter. The PC have previously asked residents not to park on the banks, but where will the anglers park if they choose to fish on CSE . Or will it be the case that in winter the banks will become ruined by all and sundry parking on them.

Who will pay the cost of repairing the banks if they become damaged or will they gradually degrade and become an eyesore.

Personally I would restrict fishing to CSW and restrict parking to the White Elephant car park that is totally underused except by our friends the H&D anglers

Questions, questions, questions, but where are the answers to be found???

Perhaps the best answer is to set the day ticket price to £100 per day to minimise damage to the banks and keep the village looking as it does today!!!

Mmm Newport's expenditure on playgrounds...best not go there! Should the brickyard be converted to allotments, much more use to residents? OK a debate for a different day!

Fishing the canal. Presently the outlay for honorarium and ticket printing will not be recouped. It is impossible to fish the canal it is so badly weeded up. In fact it is an eyesore in the middle of the village. The canal of course is a much underused facility in the village. Very few seats ( Is Bills the only one? ) to sit and while away a few moments looking at the rich wildlife and weeds of course.

Having read the rules on fishing, they do seem OK apart from the 'No Keepnet' rule - why? Sensible perhaps for carp and pike, but not for silver fish. Keepnets these days are of very good quality. Then again, what will match anglers do? Or is a different rule to apply to them?

Then there is the perennial problem of where you can fish. Check any angling website and it informs you fishing is only allowed on the EAST bank, except for a short stretch from the bridge on the WEST side. Talk to the residents of the EAST bank and they will tell you fishing on the EAST bank is banned. So where can we fish?

Another bit of history ( I have lived here a while ) there used to be a sign on the EAST bank allowing FREE fishing for the first 500 yards or so from the bridge. This disappeared some time ago. Any one else remember it?

Have the Parish Council discussed the canal with any anglers? I do hope so.

Oh! I notice Pete the gardener has to quote for repairing vandalism in the brickyard, that didn't take long did it?

There are many anglers in the village perhaps it would be worthwhile getting a few of them together to discuss this issue. Perhaps we could organise matches for the villagers? Start a village angling club!

Encourage residents to mow the top of the banks, do some planting etc.

Then of course there are dog owners who point blank refuse to pick up their dog poo. We own a dog, we pick ours up. Fishing between piles of dog poo could be fun!

£3.00 per day could of course be expensive for those that would like to fish regularly. Perhaps an annual permit for residents could be organised eg £10.00 - £15.00 per annum.

Fishing

The Parish Council is already investigating improvements/pegs and welcomes advice from anyone with an interest.

Funds currently held on account are already earmarked for improvements to the small Children's Playground after the land purchase has been completed.

fishing on the canal

now that the fishing rights to the canal are with the Parish Council, should'nt the residents of the village have free fishing ?
